Οι σύνοδοι των G7 και του ΝΑΤΟ που τελείωσαν την περασμένη εβδομάδα, ήταν το κύκνειο άσμα του Μπόρις Τζόνσον ως ηγέτη του Ηνωμένου Βασιλείου. Την επόμενη φορά που θα συνεδριάσουν οι επικεφαλής της δυτικής συμμαχίας, θα έχουν να κάνουν με έναν άλλον βρετανό πρωθυπουργό –τον τέταρτο από το 2016. Ή πιθανότατα τον πέμπτο εάν υπάρξει υπηρεσιακός πρωθυπουργός μεταξύ του Τζόνσον και του «μόνιμου» διαδόχου του. Ή ίσως και τον έκτο, εάν διενεργηθούν γενικές εκλογές από τώρα μέχρι το επόμενο καλοκαίρι.

Οι βρετανοί αξιωματούχοι που φθάνουν σε ένα διεθνές συνέδριο θα πρέπει να αντιμετωπίσουν τις ημισοβαρές ερωτήσεις που παραδοσιακά ταλάνιζαν τους Ιταλούς. Θυμίστε μου, ποιος είναι τώρα ο πρωθυπουργός σας; Λέει τίποτα ή είναι καραγκιόζης; Πόσο περιμένετε να αντέξει;

Belfast results show unionists can’t win vote on Brexit protocol

 BELFAST — Results from the Northern Ireland Assembly election have answered a key post-Brexit question: Most lawmakers at Stormont in Belfast want the trade protocol to stay, not go.

This matters because the protocol — a part of the 2019 Withdrawal Agreement that the U.K. government has spent the past year refusing to implement in full and threatening to disrupt further — contains an easily misunderstood “consent” section.

At first glance, it gives the newly elected assembly a bona-fide chance in 2024 to shoot the whole thing down. But in reality, the results from Thursday’s election mean there’s no longer any chance this can happen. The new 90-seat assembly will have no more than 37 unionist members hostile to the protocol. Unionists lost three seats and are now at least nine short of the bare majority needed.

The protocol text does grant Stormont lawmakers the theoretical power to vote in 2024 to dump the treaty, which left Northern Ireland within the EU’s single market for goods when the rest of the U.K. exited at the start of 2021. This arrangement has required new customs and sanitary checks on British goods when they arrive at Northern Ireland’s ports, not when they cross the land border with the Republic of Ireland, an EU member

Boris in freefall as ALL voters turn on EU deal - urgent action needed

 The research found Britons who backed Leave and Remain have become more likely to say the post-Brexit trade deal was a bad deal in the latest survey compared to a previous poll in January.

Some 36 percent of voters who supported Brexit now say the UK has a bad deal, with 22 percent supporting it.

Back in January, the situation was reversed with 35 percent of Leave voters saying Britain had a good deal and 22 percent disagreeing.

''Θέλουμε επανένταξη της Μ. Βρετανίας στην Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση;'' του Α.Τ. ''ΤΑ ΝΕΑ''

 

''Η πιο πρόσφατη δημοσκόπηση που διενεργήθηκε από την   Savanta ComRes  μοιάζει να ανατρέπει τα δεδομένα σε σχέση με την στάση της κοινής γνώμης και το Brexit. Θυμίζουμε ότι οι Βρετανοί ψήφισαν υπέρ της Εξόδου σε ποσοστό 52%, και κατά σε ποσοστό 48%. Η πλειοψηφία των Βρετανών αλλάζει σε 53% υπέρ και 47% κατά. Επιπλέον  επιθυμεί να υποβληθεί αίτηση για επανένταξη στην Ένωση!

Ας δούμε μερικά στοιχεία της έρευνας. Η ερώτηση ήταν: «Αν την επόμενη 5ετία όποτε διεξαγόταν δημοψήφισμα για επανένταξη στην Ε.Ε. τι θα ψηφίζατε;» Σε ποσοστό 53% οι Βρετανοί επιθυμούν να γίνει αίτηση για επάνοδο στην Ε.Ε. Λίγους μήνες πριν σε αντίστοιχη μέτρηση της ίδιας εταιρείας οι οπαδοί της «Επανένταξης» ήταν 4 μονάδες χαμηλότερα.

Δυο ακόμη στοιχεία της έρευνας έχουν ενδιαφέρον. Το 82% όσων δεν ψήφισαν στο δημοψήφισμα του 2016 και οι νεαρότερης ηλικίας ψηφοφόροι σε ποσοστό 77%, σήμερα θα ψήφιζαν υπέρ της επανένταξης. Σε τι οφείλεται αυτή η ανατροπή;

Είναι αλήθεια ότι στην σημερινή Βουλή οι Συντηρητικοί διαθέτουν ..''

''Fears of Brexit hold-up over UK-US steel spat'' BY EMILIO CASALICCHIO

 Westminster is worried that instead of improving trade between the U.K. and the U.S., Brexit is making it more difficult.

Suspicions are mounting, including inside the British government, that a trade dispute between the two countries — which should have been put to bed a month ago — is dragging on due to wrangling over the Northern Irish protocol.

U.S. President Joe Biden has warned the U.K. to tread with caution on the pact governing trade between Northern Ireland, Great Britain and the EU in the wake of Brexit, and fears an upset could imperil the hard-fought peace in the nation. But the British government has been threatening to trigger a nuclear clause in the protocol that could bring it crashing down.

Brexit debilitation

 So yet another supposedly final deadline has come and gone, and the ludicrous ‘will they, won’t they’ theatre of the last few months continues. Ludicrous, but debilitating, too, in a host of ways.

Debilitating, certainly, for those desperately anxious to know just how much their lives and livelihoods are going to be damaged, with literally only days to go. Debilitating for those businesses and others who are expected to be prepared for changes as yet unknown or, where known, lacking in the necessary operational detail, as the head of the British Chambers of Commerce has outlined. Debilitating, too, for the reputation of the UK - already so battered by Brexit - with bellicose talk of deploying the Royal Navy to police ‘no deal’ fishing rights and the ramping up of jingoism and xenophobia in this weekend’s newspaper headlines.

If this is all supposed to be part of a ‘tough’ negotiating strategy, it is one which makes for deeply irresponsible government and which is having deeply destabilizing effects. Huge sectors of the economy don’t know what they are facing, and business leaders are reported to be in despair. We’re in the extraordinary situation of planning for a military airlift of vaccines to the UK (and, equally extraordinary, of not knowing whether there will be adequate supplies of general medicines). Already supermarkets and others are stockpiling goods, with consequent massive lorry queues. Nor should the uncertainty about non-economic issues, such as those of security co-operation, be forgotten.
