Salvini suffers setback in leftwing stronghold during Italy regional elections

Italy’s centre-left Democratic party (PD) looked set to cling to power in the leftwing bastion of Emilia-Romagna, election projections forecast early on Monday.
Stefano Bonaccini, the region’s incumbent president, led with 48.2% of the vote, followed by Lucia Borgonzoni, the candidate for the far-right League, at 45.9%, according to a poll for the state broadcaster, Rai. A separate poll by SWG put Bonaccini ahead with 51.8% and Borgonzoni with 41.5%.
