Nearly 12,000 saiga antelope (Saiga tatarica) have been found dead on the remote steppe of western Kazakhstan in the last week. A tragic and shocking event, this is a major blow to the Critically Endangered species and its Ural population, which was just emerging from an unusually harsh winter.
