For Istanbul, Sunday night marked the end of an era.
Ever since President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan kick-started his political
rise by becoming the city's mayor in 1994, Istanbul was firmly in the
hands of his conservative movement. When the city finally slipped from
his grasp in March — with opposition candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu winning
the mayoral election — Erdoğan successfully lobbied for a rerun of the vote.
