Can London stop Brexit? Is there still time, as Theresa May wrestles chaotically to keep hold of soft Brexit? Throughout history, London has watched national politics from the sidelines. It has held itself aloof from the nation’s affairs, preferring to keep its eye on the money. Now London must lead the fight to drag Parliament back to sanity.
London’s deal was always that it would pay for the antics and errors of kings and queens, provided it was left in peace. Wars were bad for trade. It welcomed Lombard bankers, even naming a street after them, and the merchants of the Hanseatic League. It prospered on wool through the Calais staple market and its trading alliance with Antwerp. London even persuaded the Lord Chancellor to sit on a sack of wool.
