'The Crisis Will Be Over in Two to Three Years' DER SPIEGEL

Klaus Regling, the German CEO of the euro zone's bailout fund, the European Financial Stability Facility, is confident that the monetary union can overcome the current crisis. He considers the euro zone to be in a better position than the US when it comes to public debt, and accuses his fellow Germans of "hysteria."

''Insects could be the key to meeting food needs of growing global population'' THE GUARDIAN

Saving the planet one plateful at a time does not mean cutting back on meat, according to new research: the trick may be to switch our diet toinsects and other creepy-crawlies.
The raising of livestock such as cows, pigs and sheep occupies two-thirds of the world's farmland and generates 20% of all the greenhouse gases driving global warming. As a result, the United Nations and senior figures want to reduce the amount of meat we eat and the search is on for alternatives.
A policy paper on the eating of insects is being formally considered by the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation. The FAO held a meeting on the theme in Thailand in 2008 and there are plans for a world congress in 2013..''

Lagarde calls for urgent action on banks F.T.

''European banks may need forced capital injections to stop the spread of the eurozone’s sovereign and financial crisis, Christine Lagarde has said, in one of the starkest warnings from a senior policymaker about the danger of a new global slowdown.
In a speech at the Federal Reserve’s annual gathering of central bankers in Jackson Hole on Saturday, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund said policymakers on both sides of the Atlantic must act now to deal with rising risks to the economic recovery..''

Ms Lagarde’s comments came as EFG Eurobank and Alpha Bank, Greece’s second- and third-largest banks, said they were close to announcing an all-share merger to be followed by a €500m capital injection.

'' Even a joint bond might not save the euro'' By Wolfgang Münchau

The universal experience of financial crisis management is that the longer one waits to resolve it, the more expensive the ultimate bill will be. In the eurozone that moment has been reached. Two months ago, it was said the worst things that could happen were that the crisis would extend to Italy and Spain; and the economic recovery would stall.
Now the crisis has extended to Italy and Spain, and growth in the eurozone economy has slowed. The next plot point of the tragedy would be a return to recession. This is not a far-fetched scenario. Christine Lagarde, the International Monetary Fund’s managing director, warned with refreshing candour at the weekend that the risk of a recession was significant, and called for urgent policy action.

''An anemone fish hides from predators in the tentacles of an anemone living in a coral reef in the waters of Fiji. This film still was taken from the MacGillivray Freeman Film's documentary for IMAX theatres, "Coral Reef Adventure."

The National Science Foundation (NSF) provided a grant (ESI 00-03650) to MacGillivray Freeman Films for the making of "Coral Reef Adventure," a 46-minute documentary for IMAX theatres on the subject of coral reef ecology that discusses the worldwide environmental crisis facing reefs today. The film follows the story of two underwater filmmakers on a 10-month expedition to document the reefs of the South Pacific..'' N.SF

The Shattering of Illusions – And What Next?* by PROF. LOUKAS TSOUKALIS

The European Union (EU) entered the new century on a wave of euroenthusiasm.
Many people were convinced that integration was running fast
again, and the process would be unstoppable. Some went further, predicting
that the 21st century would be the century of Europe, and many more were
ready to believe them.1 It was too good a prospect to dismiss lightly. For the
fainthearted, and those with a more sceptical, or just narrowly utilitarian,
approach to European integration, it was of course all rather threatening. They
felt they were being swept aside. They were in a minority, not strong enough
to resist the wave of euro-enthusiasm, but always alert to take advantage of
any future change in the direction of the wind. And the opportunity eventually
did come their way.

''Secret Papers Reveal Truth Behind Soviet Collapse'' DER SPIEGEL

''Communist hardliners staged a coup against Mikhail Gorbachev 20 years ago, and the Soviet Union collapsed soon afterwards. Previously unknown documents, which SPIEGEL has obtained, show just how desperate the last Soviet leader was as he fought to retain power -- and how he begged Germany for money to save his country.
Two decades ago, the Soviet Union broke apart. "The world can sigh in relief. The idol of communism ... has collapsed," Russian leader Boris Yeltsin said of the unfolding event. He had just chased Mikhail Gorbachev, the first and last Soviet president, out of office. Gorbachev, who just before the final whistle had also been the leader of the Communist Party, had attempted to reform the country for six years until he was finally ousted in a putsch by his own party. Why did he fail? Explanations can be found in documents that Gorbachev took with him after leaving the Kremlin that he now holds in his own archive. SPIEGEL obtained a larger part of these documents from a Russian historian and has reprinted excerpts. In a series, SPIEGEL reports on the rise of the reformer and the myths surrounding the 80 year old, his relationship to former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl and issues relating to the collapse of the Soviet Union. SPIEGEL also interviewed Gorbachev.
There is one moment -- a single decision -- that some people still hold against Mikhail Gorbachev today, 20 years later.
Gorbachev, the last leader of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and last president of the Soviet Union, his wife and his closest confidants had survived the attempted coup by the KGB, the military leadership and the interior minister. They returned to Moscow from their house arrest at Gorbachev's vacation home in the Crimean resort of Foros. Their plane landed in the capital at 2:15 a.m., local time, on August 22, 1991.

Λύση A):

Λύση A):

Λύση A):

''LIFE'' DAVID ATTENBOROUGH 10 ''CREATURES DES PROFONDEURS''

''The Destructive Power of the Financial Markets'' DER SPIEGEL

''Speculators are betting against the euro, banks are taking incalculable risks and the markets are in turmoil. Three years after the Lehman Brothers bankruptcy, the financial industry has become a threat to the global economy again. Governments missed the chance to regulate the industry, and another crash is just a matter of time. By SPIEGEL Staff.
The enemy looks friendly and unpretentious. With his scuffed shoes and thinning gray hair, John Taylor resembles an elderly sociology professor. Books line the dark, floor-to-ceiling wooden shelves in his office in Manhattan, alongside a bust of Theodore Roosevelt and an antique telescope.
Taylor is the chairman and CEO of FX Concepts, a hedge fund that specializes in currency speculation. It's the largest hedge fund of its kind worldwide, which is why Taylor is held partly responsible for the crash of the euro. Critics accuse Taylor and others like him of having exacerbated the government crisis in Greece and accelerated the collapse in Ireland.
People like Taylor are "like a pack of wolves" that seeks to tear entire countries to pieces, said Swedish Finance Minister Anders Borg. For that reason, they should be fought "without mercy," French President Nicolas Sarkozy raged. Andrew Cuomo, the former attorney general and current governor of New York, once likened short-sellers to "looters after a hurricane."

AUGUST was once a time for dreaming, wandering the empty streets of this city, reading silly-season newspaper stories after a leisurely lunch washed down with Sancerre, gazing at squares where fountains plashed and the pregnant or the old chatted on benches at dusk. Then something happened.

The world speeded up. Stress levels soared. Idle moments evaporated. Egos expanded. Devices became hand-held. Money outpaced politics. Rage surged. As Leonard Cohen put it: “The poor stay poor. The rich get rich. That’s how it goes. Everybody knows.”

Wandering through Greece in the footsteps of Odysseus

''Sing to me of the man, O Muse — that cleverest of men, most favored by the gods, most frustrated by them, too. Sing to me of endlessly lost Odysseus, whose 10-year journey home, from the scorched and bloodstained plains of Troy to the Ionian island of Ithaca, was a decade of disaster So sing to me, I begged the Muse one Friday evening in May, or, hey, you know what? Just send me an intercity bus — I've gotta get out of here.
"Here" was the seaside town of Neapoli, at the southeastern end of the Peloponnesian peninsula of Greece, where nearly two weeks of island-hopping from the Turkish coast across the Aegean Sea had come to a sudden and maddening halt. From Cape Meleas — the last location Odysseus himself recognized before the North Wind drove him into the monster-ridden lands of myth — all I had to do was hop a bus or two to the port of Patra, and from there a ferry could take me, at long last, to Ithaca, the place Odysseus called home..''

The good news is: the digital revolution has revitalized journalism. The bad news: nobody wants to pay for it. With the Internet undermining the economic basis of professional reporting, the freedom of the press in western democracies is at stake, warns American sociologist Paul Starr

Θυμάρι Thymus capitatus (L.) Hoffmanns&Link Syn. Coridothymus capitatus (L.) Rchb.f

''PROPABILITY AND EVOLUTION'' N.Y.TIMES

''A number of years ago I attended an ID conference near Kansas City. One of the breakout sessions featured a fellow from the Heritage Foundation (an ultra-right-wing political think tank) presenting a lecture about probability and evolution. His talk was mostly just a watered-down version of William Dembski's standard talking points. His triumphant conclusion was that the probability of something or other having evolved by natural processes was one over something enormous, from which he concluded that evolution had been refuted.

There were only about fifteen of us in the room. During the subsequent question period, one older gentleman said something very close to this: “When scientists are confronted with a probability that small...” He paused here, as though struggling to accept just how small a number it was. “What else can they do but just stare at it helplessly?”

NAOMI KLEIN ''Looting with the lights on'' THE GUARDIAN

''I keep hearing comparisons between the London riots and riots in other European cities – window-smashing in Athens or car bonfires in Paris. And there are parallels, to be sure: a spark set by police violence, a generation that feels forgotten.
But those events were marked by mass destruction; the looting was minor. There have, however, been other mass lootings in recent years, and perhaps we should talk about them too. There was Baghdad in the aftermath of the US invasion – a frenzy of arson and looting that emptied libraries and museums. The factories got hit too. In 2004 I visited one that used to make refrigerators. Its workers had stripped it of everything valuable, then torched it so thoroughly that the warehouse was a sculpture of buckled sheet metal..''

NEWS

    • Spiegel’s Simon speaks of ‘big talk, but little action,’ as Merkel and Sarkozy ‘limited themselves to recommendations.’

    • WSJ publishes Franco-German Proposal Disappoints.

    • FTD writes ‘Germany and France demand from the other euro countries a stronger will to save.’ However, ‘in many countries there may be reservations against the austerity imperative. The move is therefore extremely risky: If only one country would reject it, the opposite to the actual goal would be achieved.’

    • Handelsblatt notes that ‘more integration’ is Merkel and Sarkozy’s answer to sceptical investors.

    • Focus speaks of ‘no carrot, just whip’, as Merkel and Sarkozy pledge ‘a common economic government, a joint debt limit, but no common euro bonds’, which would bring ‘a better chance of success to their plan.’

    • FT cites ‘lack of details’ as a principal concern.

JOURNEY TO THE DEEP

This August at ARKive we’re diving into the oceans to highlight the wonderful array of species that live within the deep blue. With the oceans covering around 70% of our planet and reaching depths of almost 11 kilometres, we have only just scratched the surface of this watery world. Approximately a quarter of a million marine species are already known to science, but amazingly, some scientists believe there are still at least another three quarters of a million species awaiting discovery!

With underwater habitats ranging from warm coral reefs to deep sea trenches, it is unsurprising that the oceans support such a varied multitude of life. From the ancient scaly coelacanth to the blubbery walrus, from the miniscule Antarctic krill to the enormous blue whale and from the sublimely beautiful mushroom coral to the slimy hooded sea slug! The oceans have it all.

''TIKTAALIK ROSAE'' OUR COUSIN

Tiktaalik roseae, better known as the "fishapod," is a 375 million year old fossil fish which was discovered in the Canadian Arctic in 2004. Its discovery sheds light on a pivotal point in the history of life on Earth: when the very first fish ventured out onto land.

''IS THE WORLD GOING BANKRUPT?'' BY ''DER SPIEGEL'' STAFF

Europe and the US are hopelessly over-indebted. The crisis that started in the US real estate sector in 2007 has devastated state finances on both sides of the Atlantic and is threatening to wreck the euro and trigger a second global downturn. The world lacks the political leadership needed to end the turmoil.
