Splendid colouration of the peacock spider

Male peacock spiders are exquisitely coloured with a rich pattern of white, blue, cream and red scales covering the body. Research published today in Journal of the Royal Society Interface describes for the first time the structural basis of this unique colouration.

The striking, colourful pattern of the male peacock spider allows it to effectively charm attentive females. The spider’s body is covered with colourful scales, partly coloured due to pigments, but some of the scales have no pigment at all and are instead structurally coloured. This latest work demonstrates a previously undescribed layering method which creates the structural colouration of peacock spider scales.
